Do you ever feel older than your actual age?

In Episode 4 of the Healing Forward Wellness Spotlight Series, Barbara La Pointe and Kevin explore the connection between stress, inflammation, recovery, and the everyday wear and tear of modern life.

Many women find themselves feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and less resilient than they once were. Is it simply aging, or could chronic stress and inflammation be playing a larger role?

In this episode, we discuss:

• What oxidative stress is in simple terms
• How stress impacts the body over time
• Why recovery feels different as we age
• The connection between inflammation and wellness
• Building resilience through proactive health choices
• Why cellular wellness has become such an important conversation

If you've ever wondered why your energy isn't what it used to be, or why your body seems slower to bounce back, this episode is for you.

Welcome back to Healing Forward Wellness Spotlight series. I'm Barbara LePoint, and once again, I'm joined by Kevin Wellness Expert and my collaborator in these conversations around women's health, practical wellness, and aging well. Kevin, welcome back.

SPEAKER_01

Well, thanks a lot. I'm happy to be here. This is episode number four.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's gone by so fast. Today we're talking about something that so many women mention brain fog, fatigue, inflammation, that feeling of waking up tired even after sleeping all night or walking into a room and forgetting why you're there. I do that all the time. Or feeling stiff, puffy mentally overloaded. Like I Kevin, women describe this constantly. What's going on?

SPEAKER_01

Well, interesting. You know, first off, those experiences are incredibly common. And second, they're the they're the telltale signals, right? So, you know, not without personal failures for sure. They're signals. The body communicates through symptoms, uh, fatigue communication, brain fog, this is communication again, inflammation again, it's communication. You know, the question becomes, what you what what's your body trying to say? Like what is it really trying to what's it trying to say in this fight or flight stage? And and how is the body reacting to that? That's really part of this conversation.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Our bodies love us so much, and they're always communicating. And what you said uh just feels like a very compassionate reframe because women often jump straight to self-criticism. I'm getting old, I feel old, my body's falling apart, um, I'm not trying, you know, I'm not trying hard enough. Uh, I think it's pretty common to have these negative uh thoughts. What about you, Kevin?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, 100%. Uh I couldn't agree with you more. You know, but you know, symptoms are information, right? You know, when you are when you have a symptom, you know, many people talk about, well, you know, how do how do I treat this? How do I, you know, uh, you know, a good friend of mine said years ago, in fact, he wrote a book on it, you know, treat the cause, not the symptom, right? So symptoms are that information source, right? And there are many different things that contribute to that, whether it be stress load, sleep again, hormonal shifts, inflammatory issues or patterns, you know, things like nutritional gaps, nervous system overload, again, that fight and flight, recovering deficits, and and those are things that uh really uh they're all interconnected. They're the body is really interconnected at this point. And you know, we just have to be able to identify with that and do the right thing.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Exactly, 100%. I couldn't agree more, but and I think that's what's frustrating to women is sometimes women as humans, we just want one answer, one cause, and that one magic fix. But what I hear you saying is the truth is that it's actually layered.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, 100%. Wellness is really uh one-dimensional, right? Uh, especially for women that are experiencing peramenopause over 40, multiple symptoms that are shifting all at once, perhaps. And really, um that that creates pause and it creates concern, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Kevin, I'd like to talk about brain fog specifically, because I hate this. Women hate this, that forgetfulness, the fuzzy thinking, or just the inability to really focus. It can be so, you know, I was gonna say scary, but actually it's embarrassing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, fair. You know, it's kind of funny. I kind of use this as an excuse sometimes. You get to 50, you get to 59 and you have these types of things kind of going on because they happen, they happen with men too, right? It's it works both ways. Uh I like to kind of use that to my advantage because if I say I can't hear or I can't, you know, I don't have the energy, I like to be able to come back. Wow, I just it's a good excuse, so why not use it, right? I mean, whether it be poor sleep stress, all of these types of things, hormonal transit, you know, transitions, uh, you know, inflammation again, over, you know, mental overload. I mean, what we do on a daily basis is enough to absolutely change a number of factors, immune system, function-wise, mental clarity, these types of things. Um, and you know, blood pressure or blood pressure, for example, might be one, blood sugar uh instability may be another. And there are things that can be actually cofactors that can be used, right? And these nutritional factors, if you want to call it that, but it's not always one thing. It's definitely not one-dimensional.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, there's so many factors, but Kevin, the mental overload is real because I don't think women appreciate how much our brains are actually carrying schedules, emotions, planning, all the conversations, um, even the grocery budget. Come on, don't say it so the mental burden matters.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, you know, at the end of the at the end of the day, it absolutely does matter, and cognitive load you know affects resilience and you know, overload impacts clarity. So there's no wonder uh why we have those thoughts or those feelings, right?

SPEAKER_00

But Kevin, the the fatigue, because that one feels almost universal.

SPEAKER_01

Women come on, you can't say it's so. That sounds familiar in itself, right?

SPEAKER_00

Speaking for all women, I'm exhausted all of the time, but then they lie down, they're wired, and they can't sleep.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. You know, but that wired, uh, but tired feeling is incredibly common in chronic stress as well, leading to other issues. Uh, you know, and that's where the nervous system becomes, you know, unregulated, right? The body can feel it's depleted, but the brain remains activated again, backed into that fight or flight. Uh, and a lot of this actually uh is is dysregulated. Uh, and the vagus nerve is another example of that uh as we change our uh age and this type of thing. So there are some common patterns and common commonalities between various parts of this uh these health challenges, right?

SPEAKER_00

Definitely. I mean, I think this is such a modern life problem.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, that's I mean, that's good. Uh it's it is a modern life problem for sure, both men and women, right? And this is why so many people are exhausted and able and not able to rest. And you know, then there's that side that you know involves inflammation, which women, uh women or men feel that they just don't even know how to describe it. Oh, it's normal that I've got stiff joints, or that's I feel heaviness in my, you know, in the way I am today, or there's puffiness, or whatever the case may be. You know, that general discomfort uh feeling older than they actually really are. These are hard things to kind of move through.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, those those landed pretty hard with me, Kevin. And I think sometimes women just say, Oh, why do I feel so old or older than I am?

SPEAKER_01

Well, uh inflammation and those conversations are becoming increasingly relevant because chronic stress and disease and lifestyle pressures absolutely influence how the body is reacting, right?

SPEAKER_00

And yes, and this is where conversations around cellular health and antioxidant support really start to matter, correct?

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. And I I absolutely love this. Uh the way that you introduced that, because supporting resilience is a foundational level, becomes a part of any conversation one has, really. And that includes the sleep and the stress support, right? Nutrition, movement, recovery. If you if you expect to have these things uh take place, it's often wise to discover and to identify what some of those targeted wellness tools are.

SPEAKER_00

Targeted wellness tools. I love that this is balanced because we're not saying that women need one miracle cure, but we're saying listen to your body, support it wisely, and and leverage those those wellness tools also. Correct, Kevin?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, 100%. And you know, curiosity over panic or supporting over shame, these types of things are really important because mentally they can put those things alone, right? Like the curiosity over panic or support over shame. Uh often what happens is people just fall into that. They fall into that, it almost becomes uh a habit, if that makes any sense. And they don't and they have a hard time recognizing how to get out of that.

SPEAKER_00

That's beautiful. That's beautiful, Kevin. I I really feel that women are collectively carrying enough shame and our bodies deserve compassion and the very best wellness tools.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, 100%. 100%.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Kevin, thank you for being here today.

SPEAKER_01

Well, thank you again. That was uh episode number four. Can't wait to uh pick up on episode number five.
